Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and beyond: a mix of coastline, rolling countryside, and market towns within easy reach of London, without ever really feeling like an extension of it. Kent in particular has a genuine reputation as England's fruit and hop-growing county, and the whole region is dotted with vineyards making the most of a climate that's edged closer to viable English wine country in recent decades. Good territory for a shorter trip: close enough for a long weekend, varied enough not to feel like a compromise.
